Bauchi State Primary Health Care Development Agency has inaugurated Mama-2-Mama Support Groups across local government areas in Bauchi Central and Northern Senatorial Districts.
Mama-2-Mama is a group of Women Volunteers who conduct house to house enlightenment on the need for women, men and adolescents to adopt good health practices aimed at addressing maternal and child health problems.
The Technical Officer, Gender Unit of the State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Ms Khadija Salihu listed some of the objectives behind the creation of Mama-2-Mama Support groups to include community sensitisation on the importance of Antenatal and Postnatal care, hospital-based delivery and immunization against child killer diseases.
Ms Khadija Salihu urged the groups to ensure personal hygiene and always be of good behaviour while interacting with members of the various communities members in order to build confidence between them.
Inaugurating the group at Misau, the Wife of the Caretaker Committee Chairman of the local council, Ramatu Adamu Salisu charged them to do their work with all sense of responsibility.
Also Speaking, the Maternal and Child Health Coordinator of the LGA Halima Garba Nasaye who said the work of Mama-2-Mama Support Groups cannot be overstated, emphasized the need for additional effort to address maternal mortality and child morbidity.
In an an interview with Radio Nigeria, some of the Women Volunteers, Amina Abdullahi and Daso Abdullahi said they have been working for over two years and their inauguration would ginger them to do more.
Radio Nigeria reports the inauguration is supported by United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF).
