A Bauchi based Civil Society Organisation (CSO), Journalists for Public Health and Development Initiative (J4PD) has commiserated with victims of the recent flood disaster that devastated Maiduguri metropolis and environs, Borno State, North Eastern Nigeria.
J4PD described the disaster as most unfortunate and an act of God which can come at anytime, any form and anywhere.
J4PD also appealed to Corporate Bodies and well to do individuals to donate daily needs to the affected persons in order to amiliorate some of the hardship the victims are going through.
The commiseration and appeal was contained in a press statement signed and issued by the Knowledge Management and Communication Advisor, Bashir Hassan Abubakar and made available to newsmen in Bauchi on Monday.
The statement contained that, “at this particular period of the fllood devastations, what the victims really need, is daily needs supplies and access to free healthcare services in their camps or host communities.”
While acknowledging the support of the Federal and other States Governments in supporting to manage the flood crises, the statement observed that basic necessities such as toiletries, menstrual hygiene kits, mosquito nets, toilet facilities and clean source of drinking water should be priority that need to be provided adequately at all the existing camps.
The CSO stated that, “J4PD is commiserating with the Government and people of Borno State in this trying period. It is heartwarming to note the proactive measures the Borno State Government is taking to rehabilitate the victims of flood disaster.”
Coordinator of J4PD, Elizabeth Kah stated that, “For the remaining displaced persons that are still in camps, basic amenities like water, toilet facilities, medications etc, should be placed as a top priority of the needs of the displaced persons by the Government.”
She stressed that “This would prevent outbreak of preventable diseases within the camps.”
The statement also commended the humanitarian efforts of world bodies like EU, UNICEF, WHO, MSF, corporate bodies and private individuals that are supporting Borno State during and after the flood crises.
