The National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW), North East Zonal Centre has championed a peace initiative in the zone to promote stability and security in the subregion devastated by years of insurgency.
The Centre’s initiatives have been well-received by stakeholders, including youths and students as recently, the North East Zonal Coordinator, Rear Admiral S.A. Mohammed (Rtd), hosted a stakeholders meeting on the development.
He presented a paper at the meeting on how to curb the proliferation of illicit, small arms and light weapons among youths and students in the subregion.
The presentation which was held in Jalingo, Taraba State, was part of the inauguration of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Zone E.
The event brought together various youths organizations, including the National Youths Council of Nigeria (NYCN).
SA Mohammed in his presentation, highlighted the importance of curbing the use of illicit small arms and light weapons among youths and students, a critical issue, as the proliferation of these weapons can exacerbate violence and instability in the region.
The newly elected NANS Zone E Executive members pledged to support the fight against illicit arms in their various institutions and society.
They emphasized the need for continued collaboration with the NCCSALW and appreciated the centre’s support for their initiatives.
Umar Afkawa, the newly sworn-in Coordinator of NANS in the North East, outlined his vision to improve welfare services for students in the zone just as he also committed to supporting the fight against illicit arms among students.
