In its resolve to support provision of quality education and enhance teaching and learning, school materials including books, pencils, cleaners and sitting desks have been donated to a Primary School in Birshi Gandu, a community in Bauchi LGA of Bauchi State.
The items were donated to the School on Monday by a Bauchi Based Non-governmental Organisation (NGO), known as Kairos Initiative.
Executive Director of the NGO, Dr Mrs Moji Iheme while speaking during the donation said that the organization donated 30 sitting desks as well as exercise books, pens, pencils and cleaners among others to the students.
According to her, the NGO embarked on a need assessment of the School and realised they were in dire need of the desks as there was none in the Classrooms.
She explained that each of the desks would accommodate four pupils, making it 120 capacity seats.
According to her, “The initiative is doing what it does best. We came here to do what we call the need assessment and we discovered that there was no single seating desk for the children.”
Moji Iheme added that, “We discovered that the school management and the pupils wanted the seating desks so dearly. You can imagine children going from primary school to secondary school and they never sat on desks. How are they going to write exams?
“So, we decided to provide them with these 30 desks and each one would accommodate four pupils and that makes like 120 pupils,” she said.
The ED of Kairos Initiative added that the NGO is also looking at how to fix the leaking roofs in the school, adding that it would be done if the school management exhibited a high level of maintenance culture towards the desks and items provided.
She then hinted that the NGO would be visiting the school to see what is happening to the desks, saying, “the better they took care of them, the more we would be encouraged to do more”.
In her vote of thanks, Assistant Headmaster, Hasana Shehu, who expressed delight toward the gesture of the NGO, promised to take effective care of the desks.
Also speaking, Supervising Officer, Miri ll, Bauchi Local Government Area, Dabo Garba appreciated the NGO for coming to the rescue of the school by providing the desks and other items.
He called on the Headmaster to inform the Community Leader and members of the community on the need for all to join hands and maintain the facilities in order to get more support from other NGOs.
Some of the pupils expressed happiness that at last they can seat comfortablly while learning as well as keep their uniforms clean unlike in past when they sat on bare floor to learn.
