As Nigeria marks its 64th independence anniversary on Tuesday, 1st October, Nigerians have been urged to reflect on the nation’s journey and the challenges that lie ahead.
It was however observed that while progress has been made, much remains to be done to ensure economic growth, security, and improved living conditions for all citizens.
The assertion was contained in a statement jointly signed and made available by Chairman, State Advisory Committee (SAC), Amb Abel Musa and State Coordinator, Amb Jeremiah Danasabe of a NGO, Initiative for Better and Brighter Nigeria (IBBN) to mark the 2024 Independence Day celebration.
On Economic Reforms, the NGO observed that Nigeria’s economy continues to face significant challenges, including sluggish growth, low human capital, labor market weaknesses, and exposure to shocks.
According to it, “The World Bank recommends macroeconomic reforms, policies to boost productivity, and improved access to electricity, water, and sanitation to foster pro-poor growth Implementing these reforms will be crucial in lifting millions of Nigerians out of poverty.”
On Security Concerns, it observed that the spread of conflict and intensifying violence across Nigeria necessitates urgent attention stressing that effective strategies to address these issues must prioritize support for poor and vulnerable Nigerians while minimizing the risk of exacerbating fragility and conflict.
On Improved Living Conditions, IBBN observed that with over 4 in 10 Nigerians living below the national poverty line, access to basic infrastructure like electricity, safe drinking water, and improved sanitation remains a significant concern.
It suggests that the government must invest in human capital development, including education and healthcare, to ensure a brighter future for its citizens.
In a call to action, it stated that “As Nigeria celebrates its independence, we urge the government to accelerate Economic Reforms. Implement policies to boost productivity, improve access to electricity, water, and sanitation, and support small-scale enterprises.”
Government should enhance security Measures by developing effective strategies to address conflict and violence, prioritizing support for vulnerable Nigerians and invest in human capital by focusing on education, healthcare, and social protection programs to improve living conditions.
The statement further contained that, “At IBBN Bauchi, we believe that by addressing these critical areas, Nigeria can unlock its full potential and ensure a better future for its citizens. We commemorate Nigeria’s independence with hope and optimism, knowing that collective efforts can drive meaningful change.”
