The Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) has expressed concerns over the proposed methodology of collecting tolls at the tollgates across the country using POS machines.
The party opined that the methodology if finally adopted may lead to traffic congestion, security threats and inconvenience to citizens.
ZLP made its position known vide a press statement signed and issued by the National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Khalid Arewa, made available to Journalists on Sunday.
It though gave the Federal Government a pat on the back over the proposal to introduce tollgates on major highways, including the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano route, for maintenance purposes.
ZLP described the development as healthy and desirable, considering the current situation of the roads across the country.
The ZLP stated that, “We support the initiative, as stated by the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, to ensure the roads are properly maintained upon completion.”
“However, we express concerns regarding the proposed methodology of collecting tolls using POS machines, which may lead to traffic congestion, security threats and inconvenience to citizens,” It added.
It added that, “In light of these concerns, the ZLP urges the government to reconsider the collection methodology and explore alternative solutions that prioritize efficiency, safety, and citizen convenience.”
“We call on the government to engage stakeholders and experts to develop a more effective and citizen-friendly toll collection system.”
