Concerned Citizens of the North-East has expressed profound sorrow over the flooding incident that devastated Maiduguri, Borno State capital on Monday, significantly impacting numerous families and communities.
The group in a statement by the Secretary General, Babangida Inuwa stated that, “Our thoughts are with those who have suffered losses of their homes, possessions, and means of livelihood in this tragic event.”
The group added that, “This distressing occurrence highlights the pressing necessity for proactive strategies to tackle the vulnerabilities faced by our region concerning severe weather phenomena, especially flooding.”
“We strongly urge the Borno State Government and all relevant authorities to work together to help those affected. Access to clean water, shelter, medical care, and food supplies must be prioritized to mitigate additional hardship,” It stressed.
The group added,”Moreover, we advocate for thoroughly assessing the region’s drainage systems and other preventive infrastructures. Flooding has emerged as a persistent challenge in Maiduguri and various areas of the North-East, making it essential to implement long-term solutions to reduce future risks. Environmental planning and urban development should be directed towards enhancing the region’s resilience against such natural disasters.”
The group added that,”We acknowledge the commendable efforts of local volunteers, emergency services, and humanitarian organizations who have promptly responded to this incident. We encourage our fellow citizens to continue providing support in any capacity to alleviate the burden on those affected.”
“As we navigate this challenging period collectively, let us also recognize the significance of unity and resilience amid adversity. We remain committed to collaborating with the government, non-governmental organizations, and all stakeholders to ensure that our region is better equipped for future emergencies,” It stressed.
The group concluded that, “We stand in solidarity with the residents of Maiduguri and are dedicated to advocating for their welfare and recovery.”
