The Civil Society Scaling Up Nutrition in Nigeria has re echoed the need for Bauchi State government to extend maternity leave for nursing mothers from three to six months for improved maternal and child health outcomes.
National Chairperson of CS-SUNN, Sodangi Chindo said to improve the nutrition of nursing mothers and their babies, they need the six months leave to exclusively breastfeed their babies this reducing cases of malnutrition.
Represented by the State Coordinator, Mrs Maureen Jibrin, the National Chairperson spoke at a two day capacity building workshop on advocacy strategies and budget tracking organized by the organization in collaboration with UNICEF for Civil Society Organizations in Bauchi.
Sodangi Chindo noted that the training was to equip CSOs with skills and tools needed to advocate effectively for improved nutrition programming and budget accountability in areas affecting nutrition in the state.
According to him, “As an umbrella body for organizations working on nutrition, we are out to strengthen the capacity of CSOs in the areas of advocacy,policy engagement and financial tracking “.
He further said the high rate of malnutrition in the state CSOs must work together and advocate for better funding and releases on nutrition and also hold government accountable.
State Nutrition Officer, Abubakar Saleh who gave an overview of Bauchi State nutrition situation said the state has reported cases of malnutrition and with support from international partners has been providing RUTF and micronutrient powder to children under 5 who are admitted with severe acute malnutrition.
He noted that nutrition activities is faced with the challenge of inadequate funding.
One of the facilitator, Ambrose Evlzoezor emphasized that advocacy is very important in shaping policies and driving resource allocation.
He said CSOs need to rally behind the proposed extension of paid maternity leave from three to six months, noting that that can only be achieved through advocacy.
