Gombe State’s Commissioner for Works, Housing, and Transportation, Eng.. Usman Kallamu, highlighted the state’s commitment to strict construction standards and close oversight to extend the lifespan of new roads and minimise ongoing repair costs.
In an interview with our correspondent in Gombe on Saturday, Kallamu emphasised the importance of setting precise construction standards before awarding contracts and ensuring contractors adhere to them rigorously. “These measures are essential to reducing long-term wear and keeping Gombe’s roads accessible for everyone,” Kallamu stated.
He noted that recent heavy rains had caused severe washouts on over 11 major roads across the state. The government is now awaiting the release of funds for urgent repairs and is exploring proactive steps to prevent similar damage in future rainy seasons.
Engr.Kallamu added that the State Road Maintenance Agency, tasked with regular upkeep, had faced delays due to a shortage of equipment. However, the governor recently approved the purchase of essential machinery, which is expected to greatly enhance the agency’s efficiency.
Addressing the condition of federal highways, including the Gombe-Biu and Gombe-Bajoga roads, Kallamu pointed out that these crucial routes for interstate travel have been neglected. “Following repeated appeals from the governor, a federal delegation led by the Minister of Works recently visited to inspect these routes,” he said. “We have received confirmation that repair contracts for these federal roads have been awarded, providing hope for safer and more reliable connectivity for our residents.”
The Commissioner also highlighted the governor’s 100-kilometre road project, which spans 11 local government areas. “Seventy-five percent of the work is already complete, with significant progress in most locations,” he remarked.
“While new roads have been constructed to withstand extreme weather conditions, older roads inherited from previous administrations have deteriorated considerably.
“We are currently assessing these older roads to determine necessary upgrades to improve their longevity and functionality,” he added.
