A chairmanship candidate of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Gombe State council, Comrade Peter Mele, has expressed concern over the operation of the union without an office in the state.
Mele, during his campaign visit to Gombe Media Corporation Radio, stated that Gombe NUJ is the only council in Nigeria without a secretariat.
He pledged that if elected, his administration would facilitate the completion of the secretariat to enable journalists to have a place to converge, meet, and interact.
Also speaking, his campaign director general, Malam Najib Sani, appealed to the state government to intervene and ensure the secretariat project is completed.
“As soon as the election is conducted and Peter emerges as the chairman, he has promised us that he is going to set up a Press Centre Committee.
“This Press Centre Committee will be charged with the responsibility of advocating the completion of the NUJ Secretariat,” he said.
Sani added, “Even the state governor, when we draw his attention to the fact that Gombe State is the only one that doesn’t have NUJ secretariat, I think he will not be reluctant to make it completed.”
Responding, the director general of the station, Alhaji Ibrahim Isa, tasked members of the NUJ to eschew sentiments and vote on merit during the upcoming election.
“Let me stress that please, let us set aside sentiments. Let us always remember that we are brothers and sisters,” he charged members.
