The Chairman of the Association of Non-Governmental Organisations (ANGO) in Gombe State, Mr Yusuf Bachama, has commended the 7th Gombe State Assembly as the most civil society organisation (CSO)-friendly legislative body since the state was established in 1996.
He gave the commendation in an interview with our correspondent shortly after he was inaugurated as the newly elected chairman of the Association on Saturday in Gombe.
Mr Bachama attributed this exceptional relationship to the leadership and goodwill of the Speaker, Rt Hon Abubakar Luggerewo, who has consistently ensured formal engagement with CSOs in legislative processes.
“We have been advocating, struggling, and pushing for policy issues, but we have never had such a productive relationship with the House of Assembly as we do with the 7th Assembly,” he said.
He emphasised the Assembly’s commitment to inclusivity, particularly during public hearings where CSOs are invited to share their views and submit formal memoranda on various matters.
” In 2024 alone, ANGO actively participated in discussions on six bills, with 80 to 90 per cent of our recommendations incorporated into the final legislation.
“This level of acceptance and collaboration is highly commendable,” he added, pledging the association’s full support to the Assembly in ensuring that its policies and laws remain people-focused.
Mr Bachama also noted that the Assembly’s consistent representation at public forums sets a standard for legislative-CSO partnerships in Gombe State.
